Viniyoga: Customized Practices for Individuals or Groups

Anybody can breathe; therefore anybody can practice yoga.  But no one can practice every kind of yoga.  It has to be the right yoga for the person.

Teach what is inside you. Not as it applies to you, but as it applies to the other.
— Tirumalai Krishnamacharya

Viniyoga is a pedagogical system developed by T.K.V. Desikachar based on the teachings of his father Tirumalai Krishnamacharya. Rooted in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra III-6 ("tasya bhumisu vinoyogah"), it emphasizes the precise application of carefully chosen tools of yoga tools, tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual or groups with shared requirements.

Trained at the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram in Chennai, Yalda Younes' teaching encompasses the foundational principles of her teachers. She tailors practices that address the specific needs of her students, taking into consideration the factors detailed in Krishnamacharya’s book, "Yoga Rahasya," which include aspects like time (Kala), place (Desha), age (Vayah), occupation (Vrtti), power (Shakti), desire (Iccha), potency (Dharma), and community (Sangha).

Her teaching process begins with an initial assessment, before collaboratinng with her student(s) to set short term and longer term goals. Establishing a supportive relationship that nurtures their self-empowerment, she uses acute observation skills and attentive listening to tailor appropriate practices, teach them to her student(s), and later on make adjustment based on their feedback. This process continues until they feel confident and empowered to carry out their personalized practices independently. At this stage, they may find satisfaction in their achieved goals or choose to return for new sessions with fresh objectives.

When teaching in a group setting, Yalda strives to provide personal care and attention to each participant while fostering a sense of community and generating an environment that is supportive, compassionate, and non-judgmental.

While rooted in the traditions of Yoga and Ayurveda, Yalda's curious, ever-evolving, non-dogmatic approach to teaching is also enriched by staying up-to-date with research in fields that contribute to the understanding of the body, breath, and mind, including neurobiology, biomechanics, kinesiology, ecology, and the arts. Her work extends to endless demands, including:

    • Breath techniques, capacity, and potential (optimizing the breath apparatus - lungs, diaphragm, pelvic floor, deep core, rib cage)
    • Musculoskeletal issues (addressing muscle imbalances, joint pain, stiffness and bone weakness)
