Je Suis Venue

dance-conference by Yalda Younes & Gaspard Delanoë (2010)

One shot,
and it would be war
One gaze,
and you’d make me born

“Ladies and Gentlemen, Mr. President,
I have come.

I have come to announce to you that in agreement with His Majesty Albert II, King of the Belgians,
with His Majesty Henri III of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg,
with His Majesty Albert II, Prince of Monaco,
and with His Majesty Hans-Adam, Prince of Liechtenstein,
a precise peace plan has been established,
and that peace will be signed and effective in ten minutes,
that is, right after the outlining of this plan.
It has been decided, therefore, that in order to establish lasting peace and a stable state, the model for the future state will be... the Kingdom of Belgium. Just like the Kingdom of Belgium, the future state will therefore have three official languages, namely Arabic, Hebrew, and Walloon.”

In the backdrop of a geopolitical conference, Yalda Younes appears as a formal messenger outlining a peace plan for a future state in the middle east. Translated from Arabic by Gaspard Delanoë, the seemingly sober discourse overflows with surreal, comic deviations, ridiculing international politics and more specifically, the “cultural dialogue” that underpins Anglo-European diplomacy. After Younes finishes delivering her speech, she goes on to “explain it more clearly” with dance. Delanoë then proceeds to methodically translate her dance, with his body.

Journal La Terrasse, FR

“The whole of “I Have Come” is comprised of parallel monologues – as opposed to, say, the “cultural dialogue” that underpins European diplomacy hereabouts. But this isn’t a politics lecture, and other more nuanced polarities suggest themselves. The formality of the language in the press briefing is utterly at odds with the absurdity of the words’ meaning. The inane political rhetoric is thrust against the expressiveness of Younes’ movement, the sternness of her demeanor against the floppy, self-satisfaction of her comic translator.”
